Day 3 Aerodactyl by FireStump Day 3 Aerodactyl by FireStump
Day 3, Favorite Flying Type
Definitely Aerodactyl, He is amazing looking, plus he's a dragon, what's better than that? Not much! :D
Unfortunately this drawing lost a lot of the detail in the scanning process.

Part of my "Pushing Myself" sketchbook.
I struggled a lot with this drawing; the position of his body was challenging for me, and those feet pissed me off because they just didn't want to cooperate with me. Overall I'm happy with this though, I think.

I'm doing this challenge to practice drawing things, namely Pokemon and things that people are very familiar with to hopefully better my skills.

First off, kudos to you for pushing yourself! It's the only way to grow as an artist :]

I think this turned out so great. The pose is so interesting and keeps the eyes flowing from head to tail.

There are a couple of perspective things going on, but they're quite minor. The way his head is tilted, it feels like at a least a quarter of his other horn should be showing. His right arm/wing is also a little confusing. I feel like the wing should be flowing upwards like the other, but it looks like it's going downward. His left knee is also conflicting with the angle of the foot. His knee is pointing forward, while the foot is at a 3/4 view. Erasing part of the line will allow it to look like the thigh is connecting to the body and creating an overall 3/4 view!

Again, I think this turned out wonderful. This is such a great semi-realistic interpretation of aerodactyl. You can definitely feel the muscle tension throughout his body with the lines around his shoulders, legs and ribs. I think if you fix those couple things it'll create an even larger impact on your viewers :]

Hello there!

Now lets get right to it shall we? I automatically found this piece looking for a line drawing. Nothing to simple but a sketch yet this caught my eye for your use of movement and negative space. It's really nice how you have a lot of action yet a lot of cut off points of it's body. A nice lead in for your eye to enter and exit the page, defiantly make sure to have that interest in your future pieces!

For the other part of the critique I'll go more into depth of just how you handle your lines. I've had some classes on line and I thought it would be good from one artist to another to pass them on. You have very confident lines and it really shows on the neck and head area. Make sure to show the same power when you get up to the wings, they look a little too sketchy and your picking up your pencil a lot in those areas. A big thing that can help that is draw even lighter and once you have a placement you like then make a strong line from point A to point B. Try to make sure those sketchy pick up lines do not show in the final line.

The biggest thing I can say that would bump up this drawing A LOT is some variation of how light and dark the lines are. SO to the best of my ability I'll try to write it out. You see that the line thickness of the leg/tail/hand etc are all the same? Well without thinning the lines, another way you can really make them pop is erase that tail a bit so it fades more into the background and so on so forth. The head (being the closest) should be the darkest and as you get back the lines could get lighter in value. There are many ways you can really make prospective work with out just relying on movement alone. But in this case, it would only push it to the top!

You have fantastic control of the body and form of what your drawing. Make sure to keep that and really press on as an artist! I hope that my tips have helped and I'd be happy to critique you again.
